How Do Braces Work?
If you have struggled with less-than-perfect teeth, it may be time to get them straightened. Many people use clear aligners from Invisalign to improve their smiles.
Braces or Invisalign can fix crooked, gapped, or crowded teeth. They can also fix overbites and underbites. Many people get braces while in their teen years, but plenty of adults get them later in life as well. The process may be a little different, though, and it can take longer to get the results you desire.
Braces work by applying constant pressure to the teeth and jaws. This is accomplished by the use of brackets, which are fitted to the teeth and secured in place with an archwire. This setup causes the teeth to shift their positions, changing the appearance of the smile. The pressure forces the crooked teeth to move into alignment.
To better understand this process, it helps to have an understanding of how teeth are constructed. The visible portion of the tooth is surrounded by gum tissue. The lower part of the tooth is encased in soft tissue, known as the periodontal membrane.
As the pressure from the braces is applied, the periodontal membrane stretches on one side and compresses on the other. This causes the tooth to loosen slightly, with new bone then forming to support the tooth. This is a process known as bone remodeling, and this is what is done to straighten crooked teeth.
There are three phases to the teeth straightening process:
- Phase one. The first step is to shift the teeth so they sit side by side. The teeth may need to be moved up, down, or across to position the edges in a straight line.
- Phase two. The second step involves adjusting the braces to correct bite problems and close the gaps.
- Phase three. Later on in the treatment process, the dentists will fine-tune the straightening, so every tooth is in its best position before removing the braces.
